We like to think of the shower as a creative portal. A space to let our minds wander, untethered by the stressors of daily life. And science supports us! The warm temperature, the pitter patter of falling water, and the feel of it against bare skin, create the ideal environment for our senses to quieten and our awareness to move inward. Scientists call this the “brain blink”, where the part of our brains that process visual stimuli and perceptual information momentarily shuts down, shifting our focus from the external to the internal. This short, unconscious gap in visual perception allows the brain to behave in a less controlled manner, meandering freely between different thoughts and ideas to join dots which might otherwise never have been connected.

Thomas Cowan, 1983

We love this idea that the humble, utilitarian bathroom space can become a place of retreat and creativity. Where, through the simple, everyday act of showering, we are able to change our state of mind and being. Calmed by the white noise of running water, we trigger spontaneous cognition; a stream-of-consciousness thinking, or mind wandering, which ignites our creative process, leading to those illusive ‘aha’ moments, as well as increased clarity and insight. And, this is where the best ideas spring from!

All-Over Oil makes an ideal post-shower, creative companion. Better wetter, slowly work it into damp skin and create further space for your mind to wander.
